I guess DVR's aren't the problem, it's the generally poor quality of the 
programming.


Well, I think that is where a DVR can be a helper.  By allowing you to pick the 
programming that is worthy without all the surfing and waiting to find out if 
the show is worth it.  Used to do this with the VCR, but it just doesn't cut it 
anymore.  It can no longer control the channels, it is limited in the number of 
events that can be set, and just how often can a tape be reused?
