So, I just watched a show in Brazil and how they are moving from a heavy dependency on foreign oil to an almost indepenence by switching to alcohol for fuel.
Over the last 5 years, they have gone from 90% dependence on foreign oil for fuel to less than 10% this year. 5 years ago, they mandated all gas stations have available gasoline, deisel and alcohol. Most cars sold today are mix-fuel cars (they can take pure alcohol, gasoline or a mix of both). The price of alcohol has fallen to less than half that of gasoline in that time. The production of alcohol is a much cleaner and cheaper process than distilling oil, so there are more companies in the business, and increasing rates of competition, helping to drive dow n the price. I am definitely going to do some more research into this.
