That was the same with me. I was spending way too much but I just had to
know every subplot. Let's see, when I stopped I was buying.

Uncanny X-Men
X-Men
Excaliber
X-Force
X-Factor
Wolverine

Plus any limited series and such. I agree, Sandman was/is great. Preacher
was also wonderful if you like that kind of thing.

I used to be an X-Men fan as well - but, I didn't like how they kept
adding more and more comics per month. To me, the story was the most
important element - and with 5+ issues per month, it began to get
costly. I hated knowing that I was missing even the most basic side
plot, so, I pretty much gave it up cold turkey. I pretty much gave up on
any comics except for the Vertigo ones. (Sandman is, and shall always
be, the best comic - ever.)
