While we are talking about X-Men, has anyone read the new Origin story of
Wolverine? I stopped reading the title years ago but I this does sound
interesting to me.

Jean Grey was a powerful telepath/telekinetic who was a founding member of
the X-Men as Marvel Girl (originally only telekinesis). During a mission in
space, she had to pilot a space shuttle back to earth while everyone else
was protected in the cargo bay. During this time she was exposed to deadly
radiation and was on the verge of death. At that point, a cosmic force
called the Phoenix force came to her and offered her a deal. It would take
her place and put her in a cocoon to heal. The shuttle crashed in a bay and
a woman looking like Jean Grey popped out saying she was the phoenix.
Unknown to everyone else, the cocoon with the real Jean Grey was at the
bottom of the bay.
A bunch of stuff happened with the phoenix thinking she was Jean Grey. At
one point, her mind was tampered with my a mutant illusonist named
mastermind. This released her dark side and resulted in her turning evil. At
one point she 'consumed' a planet, killing all on it. She eventually fought
the x-men, begged professor X to help her and 'gave up' being phoenix (or so
she thought).
The Shi'er, an interstellar empire came to judge her and the X-Men fought
their imperial guard. They were losing when Jean Grey went phoenix again.
Afraid that she would not be able to stop herself, she caused an ancient
energy weapon to shoot her, killing her (or so we thought).
At that point, the phoenix force flew out and down to earth. It tried to
integrate with Jean Grey (in the cocoon) but she rejected it due to the dark
taint. It then flew to a clone of Jean Grey that was held by a mutant named
Mr. Sinister (looooong story). This new woman, madoline prior was set up
with false memories and set to meet cyclops, Jean Greys lover. The reason
for this is that Sinister wanted them to have a child and use it. (really
long story).
Eventually, cyclops met prior, married her, had a son by her and then left
her when the cocoon holding the real Jean Grey was found. He went looking
for Prior but she was gone as was his son. Eventually he found his son and
Prior met up with the X-Men. This left cyclopse in one comic with Jean Grey
and the X-Men in another with Prior and no contact between them.
Eventually, Prior was tempted into becoming the Goblin Queen and tried to
take the world to Hell. Another long story but the result was a fight
between Jean Grey, the Goblin Queen, and the Phoenix force mixed in. Jean
lived, Prior died, part of the phoenix force was in Jean and life went on.
She eventually expelled the force totally during a mission.
Jeans daughter from the future was the last to have the phoenix force. Jean
is married to cyclopse, who was possessed for a time by appocolipse and has
gotten darker (as well as not really interested in his wife). Cyclopse is
running the X-Men, Jean is teaching at the school, the phoenix force will
pop up as a plot element again and life goes on.
There's a lot of gaps but you've got the 3 minute version.
