You missed the point.  It wasn't, "we should stick to fossil fuels",
it was that the market should be allowed to dictate what energy
sources we use.

Further the author was speculating that the likely candidate for
future energy needs will be fossil fuels.  His logic is that they're
more abundant than other sources and therefore the cost to develop
technologies to make better use of them will be cheaper and easier
than to use, say, hydrogen.

As a reference he included a book by energy economist Mark Jaccard
entitled "Sustainable Fossil Fuels" where he makes the same economic
point.
