It seems that you and Reagan very easily forget the demand-side of the
employment equation. Unemployed people won't work for a wage that is not
life-sustaining. That is, the pay for these jobs isn't good enough to allow
somebody to buy a house, feed his children, and do other things to get by in
life.
The problem with illegal immigrant work is that much of their money goes
back home, principally, to Mexico, where the wages earned in the US are
enough to provide for the family in Mexico. An illegal immigrant does not
pay taxes. An illegal immigrant may live with many other illegal immigrants
somewhere just long enough to support himself for food and shelter until he
has made enough to live better by any other means, legal or not.
The problem with this is that employers find this incredibly cheap
source of labor and exploit it to the disadvantage of American workers. If
the wage were raised to a legal and acceptable level, there would be no
shortage of labor. Of course, there are other effects of this, but illegal
employment is the end effect of low wages.
I don't support allowing Mexican workers in because it negatively
affects America. I think it makes America weak, it undermines the
lawfulness that this country enjoys. The refusal of immigrant workers to
follow American law is enough to warrant sending them back to their own
country.
This is a classic struggle of classes. The rich benefit from very poor,
the middle class gets squeezed out. This effect is detrimental to the US,
and to more than 90% of the population. Classic capitalism must be
regulated or the end result is monopoly. We are in the very midst of that
happening now.
