Big hurricanes occur every year, and it was only a matter of time before
something like Katrina happened. Big earthquakes occur with some frequency
but very, very rarely do they occur near population centers. The main SoCal
fault only has a really big event once every several hundred years. Even so,
Scripps scientists think SoCal is due for a big one, and that's the risk we
take.
