Context. As the post by sam showed, it is NOT just for us or against us. The exact quote was: "Over time it's going to be important for nations to know they will be held accountable for inactivity," he said. "You're either with us or against us in the fight against terror." A specific area of for and against as well as a specific activity that is being targeted by the for or against. If he's been quoted multiple times over the last 5 years, then I'd like people to look at the context. Plain "for us or against us" is a blanket statement that anyone can disagree with. When in context it makes the message a lot different than what people are trying to use it for.
But again, the unilateral action can be traced directly back to the UN's own resolution that was not backed up. It can be traced to a coalition action, not a US one alone. And it can be argued that less innocents are dead because of the policy, but that's a different argument that is more in the realm of philosophy than fact. And no, I don't take the quote as a "bow down to use or we'll kill you". I read it in context as "If you don't support us in our war against terrorists then we'll remember your lack of actions in the future". Bush's statement is a passive with no penalty for against. Iran's has a penalty of death. I'd say that's far different. > George W.
