Actually, I think "liberal" became a dirty word as a result of the
(republican sponsored) shift of focus from governmental practice to social
agenda. In the past, you were a liberal if you were for expanded social
programs, for instance. Today, a "liberal" is someone who wants unrestricted
drug use, human-animal weddings, and hard core porn on network TV.

It's an affective way to smear because moving ideas out of the operational
realm and into the social tends to introduce more passion.

Tell someone you want expanded social programs, they may politely disagree
with you....tell them you want gay marriage, they may have a coronary on the
spot.

I'm a proud social liberal - I want the gov't in a little of our lives

I want as little government intervention as possible, but in today's
political climate, I can't use the word "liberal" to describe that. Hell,
that used to be described as "conservative"....who knows what it is
today...."common sense" maybe?

Put another way, I'm part of the libertarian wing of the Republican

I don't think W is Catholic. Are you referring to the influence of the RC
church and/or the Pope???
