Communists tend to involve themselves in every aspect of your life. Gays and the religious were persecuted in the Soviet Union, and birth control is enforced in China. Socially liberal to me means that you believe peoples morals are their own and shouldn't be the focus of legislation. Gays should be able to marry, people should be able to sell their bodies for sex, or take drugs, or get tattooed from head to toe, or whatever.
