As for sound, I don't use HDMI for sound, I have an optical connection from
the cable box to the receiver. The HDMI connection is only for video.

As for better quality, I don't notice a difference, however there isn't any
broadcast 1080p yet so it is hard to say. I most used it there because the
cable box had the connector, and I needed the component for other things.
