For years, Islamic Fundamentalists have attacked us. A small portion of lunatics control huge portions of land and money (from oil). The goal for most is to have one religion and one ruler. Convert or die. It's a slow process and over the years we've been ignoring the problem hoping nothing would happen on our watch, referring to the people and the government. Bin Laden made a move to escalate things by going after us to make us leave Saudi Arabia so they can take over. Once they controlled Mecca, the Egyptian Jihad would likely also take power. The Muslim Brotherhood would take over and influence the other nations that are on the fence. When the Middle East is one nation and the war on the West starts, whose side do you think the Muslims in Europe will take? The most popular name today in England is Mohammad.
By stopping this inevitable movement now, forcing their hands before they have the strength they need, we can survive. We can shake the trees and hope the lunatics fall out and the people take control their countries. It's going to take a long time and a lot of lives. However, if we don't start the process soon enough it will become too late. Iraq wasn't part of 9/11, but Saddam supported terror against the West and would gladly help our enemies. I imagine he thought when the time came he would be the one with all the power. We saw that when he went into Kuwait giving him control over most of the worlds oil supplies. That would've made him an extremely powerful man if we didn't stop him.
