Keep in mind these are isolated incidents and should not be construed as
"this is the mindset of all service members over there". The military does a
pretty good job of weeding out malcontents and mentally unstable folks, but
some do slip through the cracks, and unfortunately places like Iraq and
Afganistan brings out that behavior. When I was there in '05 we had a supply
sergeant set off a claymore mine and then lobbed three grenades into the
room of his commander in the palace they were living in, killing the
commander and a LT who was only five days in country. This becuase he was
being investigated for blackmarketing in Iraq. It is unfortunate that
innocent folks have to die because of these vermine and I think that the
military should do a better job of making sure men and women are mentally
stable for doing the job. I mean, the Navy has one hell of a procedure for
screening potential submariners. One guy in my unit was in the Navy and was
a sub crewman, and he said that they have about a 70+% failure rate on
potential submariners. Why not use something similar for new recruits?
