I actually didn't say college was the exact same thing as real life, I said
it was a gentle introduction to it.  There is a pretty good benefit to
learning over the course of 4 years how to pay your own bills and deal with
real world issues without being thrust into the Real World right away.

Plenty of people do it either way and turn out just fine, however, my point
was that there are other things to gain from a 4 year college that simply
aren't available in an online course.  Assuming you already live in the real
world, and that you don't need to potential contacts that college provides
you (you're established already), an online course might give you everything
you need.
