Because of the misunderstanding people have about the intent of the science.
Many believe that evolution, and many of the people pushing evolution are doing so as a replacement for creationism. Which bothers them. People that file lawsuits one way or another just flame the fire. People are worried that the schools will turn their children into Godless heathens because of the preaching of sex and Godlessness. People in this country are worried that our politicians don't believe as they believe and are worried that they'll try to turn their children into Godless Heathens. People don't like having things shoved down their throats. It doesn't matter if it's right or wrong. But they like to be convinced. Take people that learned something in school, and now turn around and teach something completely different to their kids, and they get concerned. You cannot change minds until you can change hearts. You have to get the people to want to listen before you can change their minds about what they accept as science. Science is very much rooted in opinion as it is based on observations. You get enough people to hold the same opinion of something based on reproducible experiments and it is science. Over many years science has evolved as our technology has allowed us to look more in it. I think calling them Jesus Freaks is a little over the edge.
