Personally I think you'd do better with a PS2 and the Eyetoy camera. Both
the console and the camera will run you about $150 (less if you buy used).
The camera requires about as much room as the Wii but more light (duh!). At
the same time you don't need any controller to speak of (almost all games
use simple gestural control).
Games are played mostly by collision detection with your video image: you
see yourself on screen and have to swipe, strike or otherwise touch things
on the image. You have a lot more freedom than the Wii in that there's a
lot more open arm movement (you're arms aren't tethered together). There
are no controllers to hold or worry about flinging - you can "get into"
things a little more.
There's at least one "game" (Eye Toy "Kinetic") that's specifically designed
for working out (it was jointly published by Reebok and Sony). There are
simple Tai-bo exercises, kick boxing, motion tracking, etc. Most of the
games (about 20 games that require the EyeToy are available with about 15
more than offer optional mini-games) are casual collections. The camera
comes with a game ("EyeToy Play") that offers about 15 games and something
like 25 "toys" (psychedelic visual effects and not-quite games - kids LOVE
it).
Most of the games are extremely simple: your faced with a series of dirty
windows and have to flail around to "rub them clean" or you have to keep a
soccer ball in the air or you have to hit and kick ninjas attacking you from
the sides of the screens. The camera also has a microphone which some games
use - for example in one game a random ghost will appear and you have to
clap your hands to scare it off.
Lastly - since you mentioned it - DDR for the PS2 offers enhanced play with
the EyeToy. As you're dancing the screen gets "dirty" and you have to wave
your arms to clean it so you can see the moves. Pretty hectic but a
definite workout.
The PS3 camera (just a more adult "The Eye") will be out soon but not much
is announced for it - but it will work with the old games and the old EyeToy
works on the PS3.
All that said Wii Fit looks pretty sweet too. I'd like to see some
real-world reviews of it first. I'm a little worried about how it'll work
on carpet and whether it'll even hold me. But it's definitely got
potential.
