Anybody else see this? Basically Ben Stein is doing a documentary (not yet released) in which he posits that Intelligent Design is not being defeated because it's scientifically invalid but rather do a concerted, organized conspiracy against "new ideas" in science - he actually calls it "Big Science".
http://www.expelledthemovie.com/home.php What most upsets me about this is that he actually trying to wrap this in the flag: he's claiming that NOT teaching intelligent design is a freedom of speech issue! Separation of Church and State? That's inconvenient so he ignores it. He actually has the gall to claim that entrenched scientific ideas are eliminating free inquiry! As if "Intelligent Design" is playing by the same rules and a petulant science is just bullying it. (For what it's worth nothing about intelligent design meets and sort of scientific rigor - it just doesn't.) The whole damn thing just shows such a horrendous disrespect for the ideals of this country and for the vast, open and vibrant and truly diverse scientific community. Furthermore he parrots the same tired old clichés and misconceptions about science and the scientific method that have been used for that past 80 years and more. Almost more worrisome are the reports that participants were interviewed under false pretenses and are being blatantly misrepresented: http://www.pandasthumb.org/archives/2007/08/im_gonna_be_a_m.html#comment-198 565 http://lots-o-thoughts.blogspot.com/2007/08/ben-steins-expelled-part-i.html I'm getting so sick of this hugely powerful, overwhelmingly vocal and truly invasive majority playing the wounded, persecuted minority. When we see a friggin' atheist in the White House you can start whining - how about that? I can't say I've ever really agreed with him on any major issues... but dammit I used to LIKE Ben Stein. I thought he had least had integrity.
