Not all economists agree that deficit spending is bad and not all economists agree that tax cuts are good.
There are strong cases for all these different points of view. Personally I look at what Reagonimics did for the country -- create one of the worst recessions since the great depression (GHW got blamed for this, but it was really eight years of Reagannomics (supply side, trickle down); drive up unemployment to an all-time high because the tax cuts gave the fat cats more money for corporate takeovers; drove down consumer confidence because of all the layoffs; depress real, inflation adjusted wages for the average working man to historical lows -- in otherwords, we've been through eight years of supply-side economics, or voodoo economics as it was once called, at it was disasters for the country. This is the one thing I really, really disagree with the current administration on and the main reason I voted for Gore (thought I voted for McCain in the primary). I once heard Walter Williams (former chairman of George Mason University Economics Department) give a speech and he said that the government can only do two things to help the economy; cut taxes and reduce the deficit. Reducing the deficit lowers tax rates so people/companies can borrow more money and, in the case of companies, can use that money to improve it's business making it more profitable allowing it to create more jobs, etc. Same goes for individuals. Deficit spending is bad as well as high taxes.
