That they accept public money is an extremely contentious issue and
flies directly in the face of their discriminatory stance.

Crying "we're a private organization" and then accepting public funds
is having it both ways.

FWIW, I _was_ an eagle scout.

I was and _am_ an atheist.

I don't think those things are mutually exclusive, I am a moral,
upstanding individual.

BSA doesn't think so. BSA thinks I should not be allowed to be in
their organization, regardless of my status as a holder of their
highest rank. They have even told me so.

I will not allow them to get their talons on my son.

FWIW, it is _not_ about whether BSA should be "forced" to allow
groups/individuals that they don't want into their ranks. It _is_
about not allowing them to spread their insidious beliefs
unchallenged.
