My major concern is legal rights, I've always been an advocate of "what
consenting adults do on their own time is their own business", If two people
want to spend the rest of their lives together, they should be afforded all
of the rights and responsibilities that it entails.

Our society has wrapped this up in a nice religious package by stamping the
word "marriage" on it. We've given religious officials the power to perform
legally binding ceremonies, and by proxy the authority to dictate who get's
the "privilege".

OK. Fine. But the gov't should use the same language for everyone,
then. As in, "I went before the judge to get a civil union with my
girlfriend".

If the term "marriage" has any legal standing, then it should be applied
across-the-board. Also, if a "marriage" is a religious- or
culturally-based moniker, then there is absolutely nothing stopping any
church or other non-government organization from performing marriages.
