There have been a series of prospective studies that have looked at playing
video games and later abuse. One very good study followed over 600 students
from kindergarten entrance to their entering high school. They were able to
assess initial levels of aggressive behaviors and control a variety of factors.
Everything considered exposure to aggressive/violent media was still strongly
associated with aggressive behavior even when all other things were controlled.
Moreover they proposed a model that suggests a positive feedback system
involving perceived control, violent video games and aggressive behavior. So
far the model has been supported in subsequent research.

> What caused Murder in the days of the caveman?
> Paintings on the walls?

BTW things used to be considerably more violent. If you read some of the social
histories of various countries, you have such things as dog fighting, bear
baiting, wife and child abuse etc.
