Maybe... I kind of see it two different ways:

One hand asking "is where he is because he's black?" (or "is Hillary where
she is because she's a former first lady?") is a valid question. Did those
circumstances... essentially "accidental" give them a boost to their current
positions? Maybe, maybe not.

But that question really is elementary. It's interesting, sociologically,
but doesn't really change the landscape. They're THERE NOW. Now,
regardless how they arrived, you have to deal with them based on their
qualifications for the job.

On the other hand the question "should he be where he is because he's
black?" is pretty nonsensical. It's a value judgement. Reverse it to
"should he not be where is because he's black?" and it even begins to get
ugly.

The first question is saying that their acceptance might have something to
do with a quality not normally considered. It's really no different than
asking if Bush-the-lesser was nominated because he's the son of a president
or if Reagan was nominated because he was an actor.

It's introspective; asking: are we paying too much attention this unrelated
thing?

The latter question, again, is asking for a value judgment. It's asking,
should this unrelated thing be considered paramount?

I guess it really boils down to this: voting for or not voting for Obama
_because_he's_black_ is a mistake... but while the former may just be poor
judgment the latter is just plain ugly.
