Speaking of Japan, Charles Krauthammer noted in his latest column in the
Washington Post that we could end up seeing an arrangement with Iraq much
like the arrangement we have with Japan, where the Japanese government pays
about 75% of the cost of our troop presence, and we provide essentially a
deterrent threat to aggressive regional powers, which in the case of the
Middle East means Iran and Syria, although we also provide a better working
arrangement with NATO ally Turkey than the Iraqi government would have on
its own.
