I think the breeding question is a valid one though. I agree they would never purposefully injure their horse, but recent breeding practices MIGHT be doing just that, and it should be examined.
Obviously there is an animal care consideration that should be the driving force here, but even beyond that, there is a motivation that should be pretty much universal: money. Breeding a horse fast enough to win doesn't do you any good if it's not strong enough to SURVIVE those races....that's millions lost in stud fees and future purses.
