Bio Diesel isn't a technological dead end, you can produce it in your garage
with the right equipment. It would just take commitment from distributors
and refineries to produce it in mass quantities, the technology is proven. 

The original intent of the diesel engine was to run on vegetable oil

exactly, which is why it's frustrating to see money siphoned off to a
technological dead-end.
