The electric motor isn't new, but marrying it to a gasoline engine  
is.  Also the regenerative braking is a new application.  The research  
into being able to power a vehicle with just an electric is being  
advanced by the hybrids.

Sorry, I haven't been following this thread so closely, so I don't  
know why an electric car wouldn't make sense.  In Texas, we have a ton  
of windmills producing electricity.  In areas around rivers we can get  
hydroelectric.  These are both renewable sources of energy.  There are  
other cleaner ways of generating power than burning gasoline.  So, if  
you can power a car with these sources, why not?
