How big is the company? Any possibility of moving to a different group or team internally? In larger companies that's often a good way to maintain seniority and benefits while keeping things fresh. > > Anyhow I just got a job offer that is very attractive, it means > making > > quite a lot more money a year, with the possibility of a telecommute > after > > 6 months. The biggest problem is that it will involve a commute into > the > > DC area. I'm not sure what that means... but it sounds nasty. I HATE commuting and the longer it takes the more I hate it. That said there many be benefits depending on the style. I commuted for years into Boston: about a mile walk to the train and (depending on connections) about 45 minutes on the subway. Since I was able to take advantage of flex time and come in a bit later I rarely had to deal with crowds and 90 minutes a day allowed me to get a ton of reading done. On the nice days I was able to bike to work - the best and most exercise I've ever been able to stick with. So there CAN be good sides to it. Still an hour commute means, at a minimum, 10 or 11 hours a day dedicated to "work". > > So the question is do I jump ship or wait to see if things improve, > or at > > the very least until I fully vest. Personally (and I am sometimes naïve about these things) I see no issue with confirming that with them. They may (if they really want you) make arrangements (perhaps even a short term "evenings and weekends" schedule) or they may not... but I see no reason not to ask. Of course this needs to be balanced against the value of the vestment... is there any value or is it just a "when we hit it big, so will you!" deal? I do feel for you though. Career moves have been the most frustrating, stressful aspects of my life. More stressful (for the sheet impotence involved) than sickness, childbirth or moving. In the end, no matter what you decide, you'll feel almost immediately like you've let an important opportunity slip past. The whole process just absolutely sucks.
