I'm actually following that one pretty closely (there was a feature about this in the recent Skeptical Inquirer). Charges are often filed (many times by family members) in these cases but I don't know of case where the charges actually resulted in a conviction. Honestly, as disgusted as I am by the event, I'm not sure if a conviction SHOULD be made. These are not, in any emotional sense, "bad" parents: they loved their child, they grieved deeply at her passing. They honestly thought they were doing the best thing. So were the parents who put their children though "rebirthing" ceremonies where they asphyxiated and died. So were the parents that let their daughter die of brain tumors on the advice of a "psychic herbalist". So are the parents that refuse to vaccinate their children or those that pass on HIV because they're convinced there's no "proven" link with AIDS. As much as the atheist, rationalist in me screams "stupid, stupid, idiot people!" I must admit that I wouldn't place them in the same category as child neglectors/abusers. Now the people that they took advice from... that's a different story. Lying faith-healers, crackpot psychologists, bogus psychics. Those fuckers should be fried alive.
