>Georgia, it seems, is hell bent on keeping "its" territory, regardless

Remind me, whom did US support when Serbia was defending its integrity?

>Now let's consider the Georgian perspective. The Soviets subjugated

Georgia ASKED to join Russia hundreds years before "Soviet Era" to avoid its
occupation by Ottoman Empire.

>Putin-led (ex-KGB) Russian government...

If a key word here "ex-KGB", count ex-CIA people in post-war White House.

>interests of the poor South Ossetians, but then they bomb the capital
>of Georgia and cut the country in half with a massive ground assault,
>everyone should be highly skeptical of Russian motives, however
>worthwhile their stated goals.

Human Rights Watch Organization (not "ex-KGB") issued today a report about the
content of Western mass media related to South Ossetia crisis. They called it
"worst propaganda action ever", which even cannot be compared with Soviet-time
publications in the Soviet press. The truth is that Tbilisi was NOT bombed,
Georgia is NOT split in parts, and the aggressor IS Georgia. Georgian Interior
minister put today the total of Georgian casualties below 100 people.

Georgian commandos committed horrible atrocities at Olympic Games Opening night
destroying the entire capital of South Ossetia (there is no a single building
remain standing) and killing at least 1,500 civilians using heavy artillery,
tanks and "Grad" systems, and executing non-Georgian population in villages
around Tzkhinvali. Almost a half of S Ossetia population (30K out of 70K)
crossed the border with North Ossetia trying to escape Georgian troops. When
CNN reported that city of Gori "is occupied by Russians", Reuters'
correspondent, who WAS in Gori at this moment, reported that the city is
completely empty.

Russian bloggers analyzed pictures published by Western Internet sites. Most
of them are staged and were intended exclusively for Western audience
consumption.

>What do the Russians want? Control of the oil and gas pipelines to the
>sea. How far are they willing to go to get it? We'll see.

You forgot that this is the US usually starts oil and gas wars. Could you
imagine that other people could fight for different values?

Saakashvili never makes a single move without consulting with US advisers
first. So, US definitely knew about the assault plans in advance and did not
stop him. Now when this plan failed, they blame Russia. Dr. Gebbels used to
practice this approach...
