Honestly, this could be out of ignorance on the matter, but could you
expand upon this? I didn't think that McCain had a choice in the
matter. From what I read in his statements, he feels bad that he
cracked under torture and gave up false testimony against his fellow
soldiers. Which I certainly don't hold against him of course. That was
one of the reasons I applauded his old anti-torture stance and was
appalled at his new pro-torture stance. For someone that has been on
the side of being tortured and giving up false information, I just
don't see how you could justify it.

As I said in a previous email, I do think that McCain has some
accomplishment to his name. Not as much as many might imply, but he's
gone out there and done some solid work. 8 years ago I would have had
a tough time between McCain and Gore. There was a decent chance I
would have voted for McCain in fact as I felt largely betrayed by the
Clinton administration, Gore was an underwhelming candidate and I have
a profound distaste for Tipper Gore (and her unholy alliance with Joe
Lieberman) dating to the culture wars.

That being said, I feel like McCain has shit upon most everything I
liked about him in the last 4 years. Past glories != current value.

He does not have the track record of McCain without a doubt. I think
he does have some accomplishments to his name, but it is most
certainly true that they are not a mile wide and deep. None the less,
I look at the candidates available to me and I think the choice is
clear for me.
