In all the years I've been observing politics, I've found that most of
the labels of leftist, socialist or communist have been hurled at
people by those who want to demonize them, rather than actually being
the ideals of the person being labeled. There are extreme leftists
out there - I see stuff from them daily on some of the lists I read,
but I rarely see them involved in mainstream politics.

I found this especially interesting in the labeling of Obama. If you
google Obama and socialist, you'll get a lot of hits, but they mostly
occur after Hannity and several others determined that labeling him a
liberal wasn't scary enough. When the socialist label didn't have any
impact, they escalated it to communist. I knew their campaign was
somewhat effective when my boyfriend, who really doesn't follow
politics at all, asked me if Obama was a socialist. After I stopped
laughing, I asked him to which radio show had he been listening. He
confessed to getting an email from a neo-con friend that contained the
claim. My advise to him was to filter that guy to the trash. (grin)

It's easy to avoid propaganda if you recognize the tactics. What I
find interesting are people who continue to parrot the crap even after
they have been shown the truth. I once challenged a talk radio host
to do an entire show without using any labels, spin or buzzwords. I'm
still waiting.
