I like it. I always respected how Israel required it of their children over the age of 18. 3 years for males, 2 for women. And I believe, as a whole, they have a very strong sense of country and responsibility. Overall. There's always exceptions.
Something to that effect would work, especially after high school. Nowadays most "children" (17-24) I meet are spoiled rotten brats that wouldn't survive a week in the forest, let alone know how to respect anything, including the clothes ono their back. Their manners are atrocious, and I want to tie every last one of them to a tree for a week in the desert to teach them to be thankful for life. (by the way, there are exceptions, so don't jump on me) ANYTHING that humbles them, gives them a sense of pride, responsibility and team work, mixed with some common sense and survival-ship, topped off with volunteerism and giving back to their community is "A-OK" in my book. Of course I have no children, so take my opinion with a grain of salt I suppose.
