I'm not advocating mandatory service. I do like the idea of tuition credit in exchange for service, or service in exchange for unemployment compensation (my idea - not Obama's).
I doubt anyone would force children into community service that required them to travel far from home. The transportation cost would offset any benefits. CCC did some amazing stuff. The tree planting alone was so valuable. Doesn't Israel have a volunteer tree planting program?
