You definitely shouldn't see any lag... I'd personally try another
controller first (that's simplest by far).  You might try connecting the
controller directly, but I'm not sure that would actually help (I'm not sure
if the radio is still used when it's connected via USB or not).

Also look for anything that might conflict the radio - move the PS3 away
from motors (fans, etc) or other EM generators (old TV's etc.)  It really
shouldn't matter (my PS3 is sitting within 12 inches of my 34" CRT TV with
no problems) but it's worth a try.

The only thing I can think of is weirdness with the radio...
