point taken

*"The sun does not control pollution, it controls the planet's
temperature. Just take a look at Mars, there are no balmy afternoons on
that planet. As for pollution, if you are talking about sulfur, cyanide,
heavy metals, etc. then I agree with you, we need to do everything we
can to eliminate those contaminants from the atmosphere. If you are
talking about carbon dioxide, we'll just have to disagree there. I see
increased CO2 levels leading to stronger plant growth, which produces
oxygen, which balances out the CO2 emissions. I wonder if all these
gases increase the size of the atmosphere, or if the atmosphere stays
constant based on the mass of the planet. Does the composition of the
atmosphere determine what leaks out and what is retained? Does solar
energy change the composition of the atmosphere? I don't know the
answers to those questions. All I know is that the Sun is so huge that
if we think we can change Earth's temperature, we might as well try
defrosting Mars with a hairdryer. "*

The flaw that I find in this statement is, this... prior to the
industrial revolution I'd completely agree with you, the planet was
still in a stage where man wasn't making a significant impact on the
planetary environment at large. It could easily handle and process the
amount of CO2 we were dumping in.

Once the industrial revolution got rolling and we began to clear cut
forests (especially the Amazon rainforests, which produces 20% of the
planet's O2 by itself) we threw the entire machine out of balance. The
planet can no longer balance our CO2 emissions, because we're removing
the means to do so far faster than in can regenerate.

So global warming is a two part problem

1) We must reduce the levels of CO2 emissions to a level that the
current mechanisms can process.
2) We must replenish the forests and plant life which we have destroyed,
in order to set the balance right again,
