One more thing and then I'll shut up.

Most trainers are really big on the "PWO" or post-workout shake which
should be one of the few times in the day (the other being upon
waking) when you should purposely hit the high GI carbs like candy,
soda, or fruit juice (I use Pom) and lots of fast-acting whey. This
is because the high-GI carbs cause an insulin spike which replenishes
the lost glycogen from your muscles and brings the protein with it.
Result: anabolic.

There's also a pre-workout (and during) best practice, but the data
seems less clear (if you hear something, please let me know).

Personally I was thrilled to see this study which bumps my best friend coffee:

"This was more than simply adding the two separate effects, suggesting
that caffeine and exercise acted synergistically. As an added benefit,
the subdermal fat layer in the mice shrank dramatically in these
animals. These results suggest that making caffeine part of your
exercise program may give it an extra boost, and help limit the damage
caused by any of the exercise you pursue outdoors. "
