The real big problem with it is that in terms of meeting people in bars and so on, you have a lot of social cues and nuances that at least give you some idea of the person. Chat rooms, emails etc don't have those cues. So there's a greater chance of making bad judgments regarding the person. I expect as social behavior evolves for the web we'll start seeing the equivalent of those same nuances and cues.
