Ok, I am embarassed to discuss this but I will. Of course its entirely
anecdotal.

Many moons ago I used to hack onto AOL and terrorize people for kicks.
Don't ask me why, I was obviously bored and young.

In any case, I can tell you that in those days they only people on AOL
(obviously an exaggeration - but seriously, most of the folks) were folks in
unhappy marriages and we stupid hacker kids. AOL allowed them to escape the
marriage, meet someone who seemed to truly appreciate them (because they too
were escaping a bad marriage) and basically throw the marriage out without
working on it at all. The marital support system was replaced by the online
buddies and usually an online gf/bf. The spouse of the individual would
realize something was up by the amount of time spent on the computer and
would begin to try and make amends with the unhappy person. The unhappy
person, under other circumstances might have been inclined to work it out,
however because of the "support" of their online friends they generally
didnt' bother and dumped a 20 year marriage for a 3 month internet affair
with someone they never met.

Some of those 3 month internet affairs actually worked out though.

There was also a large number of abused women who hang out on aol, who have
no way to leave their husbands, but thats another story.
