Hamas did NOT win full control of Gaza in the elections. They won enough
seats to hold sway in Parliament, but Abbas was (and still is) the President
of the Palestinian Authority, which is the UN-recognized government entity
in the Palestinian territories. Once Hamas attacked the security apparatus
of the PA, they ceased being a legitimate democratic political entity.

Being democratically elected is not enough. You have to respect the
institutions of democracy and abide by its laws and conventions. Hamas did
neither.
