I have no problems with debate on the issues. But thus far the debate has not been characterized by the issues. Closing Guantanamo is, I hope, not an issue. It is something that should have been done some time ago. The tricky part is what to do with the remaining people at Guantanamo. We've already seen a number of countries stepping up and signaling a willingness to take detainees now that Bush isn't President. That may serve to our advantage. It may not.
The incoming team has been alarmed that there are no thorough case files on many detainees. Information doesn't seem to have been shared between agencies and the people involved have said that there was a priority placed on detainment and interrogation rather than keeping track of how they got there and why. That may have made sense to the people that felt they were in a 24-like, torture them now to get the information we supposedly need scenario but it is going to make it more difficult for an actual determination of what needs to happen with them. Lets debate the issues when they actually come up. Until then, lets give the new administration a bit of time to figure out what they got left with.
