Thanks Larry,

I tend to agree with you on this one. My take on it is that some lawyer got wind
of this and convinced the parents that Accutane was the reason.

The parents are motivated by being able to point the finger at someone else and not
have to look at themselves. IMO, that will only be temporary. If they were
irresponsible in the sense that they didn't take, what most people would consider to
be, basic steps to intervene, then they will have to live with that their whole lives.
No matter what you convince others of, you still have to live with the demons within.

As for the lawyers, well. That's pretty self explanatory. Big (drug) corporation
with deep pockets. They are figuring the worst thing that will happen is a settlement.

Those are what I see to be the motivations. I hope that they (the FDA who ironically
approved the drug in the first place, but don't get me started on self/un regulated
governmental agencies) keep looking into this and either ensure that appropriate
measures are taken or remove the drug if it is deemed to be more trouble than it's
worth. I mean no offense to anyone here who needed to use it, but it's only acne.
It's not like you'll die. I didn't suffer from it, so it might be easy for me to say
that, but I'm not a big fan of medication anyways. It just seems like an awful risk
for something that boils down to cosmetic improvements.

  Michael,

regarding whether chemical xyz can affect the abc part of the brain - in a
nutshell yes. You can even try this experiment yourself, drink about 18
ounces of very high proof vodka and observe the effects. Hook an EEG with at
least 256 electrodes and I can start to produce a 3 D electrical activity
map of the brain. Even better you can use a device called a functional MRI
and create maps of the neurochemical uptake activity of the brain. All of
these measures will show changes in the same regions in the brain. When I
was at Virginia Tech, we were looking at EEG activity in the brain as it
related to attention and how we process attentional information. There are
clearly defined neural pathways involved in these cognitions and behaviors
  and they can be traced.
