So... should 100 Israeli children should die because the fuckers shooting rockets at them are standing on a school? > Let's bring this closer to home. > > If a fringe group of white supremacists started shooting up Washington > from > the top floor of a hospital and killed several people on the streets > below, > would the US government > order a military strike on that location? Would that be seen as an > appropriate response? False analogy and an argument from emotion. If a fringe group of White supremacists did as you said: 1) The situation would be contained and controllable outside of the immediate vicinity. You know that we control the streets, the buildings and populace surrounding the hospital - setting up a perimeter of snipers, for example, would be safe and easy. This can't be said in this situation: Israeli soldiers cannot construct a safe perimeter so safer, but less precise, more damaging, measures are taken. 2) The people in the hospital, in your hypothetical, would almost certainly be completely unaware of the situation at hand and would almost definitely be in opposition to the attackers. In the case of Hamas we've seen schools, hospitals and residential buildings being used as weapons storage and launching platforms with full cooperation and government support. 3) All combatants would be Americans - in other words this would be an internal police action, not a military action. 4) the situation would be unprecedented: time would naturally be taken to explore the situation and react accordingly. However the situation in Israel has been going on for decades. The Israeli position on these situations is clearly defined and unwavering: shoot at us and we will shoot at you. Yet the Palestinians still - again, after decades - are making the conscious decision to engage in areas with highly vulnerable civilian populations. 5) Your White Supremacists would be rarities, oddities - they would be self-funded and self equipped rather than government equipped and government sponsored. You're also be disingenuous by purposefully lessening the impact of your example: a group of people randomly "shooting up" an area and killing several people is very different than militarily armed combatants with RPGs in a prolonged conflict. A better analogy might be: What if combatants from Vancouver started attacking northern Washington from within Canadian civilian centers? Although you have evidence that the combatants are being equipped and supported by the Canadian government they publically deny this and block efforts to investigate. These attack, which ebb and flow, are punctuated by acts of more traditional terrorism (car bombs, suicide bombers, etc). Your population is scared, beset and this continues for 40 years. Now... how would you deal with this situation?
