I agree that tax problems are very common. Part of that is the complexity of the tax code, part is human nature in trying to game the system. I never called them cheats. I could really see there being some reasonable explanations for the situations that are brought up. Daschle says he never got a 1099 that included the items that are disputed (being, as I recall, the use of a car and related items) and so he filed what was on the 1099 he got. I can see that. Maybe he tried to game the system, maybe not.
None the less, he's been a public figure for a long time and he isn't a pauper. He can afford to have people make sure that his returns are above reproach and he knows the game well enough to know that people will be looking. I don't expect public figures to be pristine. But I do expect them to cover the bases that they need to in order to be effective public servants. Cheat or no cheat, he's a big boy and ought to know how the game is played. If he wants to be in it, he needs to cross the t's and dot the i's. Judah On Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 10:47 PM, Maureen <[email protected]> wrote: > > Tax problems are routine among all classes of people.
