Hate crime vs. crime rooted in religious doctrine.
Now vs. 40 years ago and/or longer.

The Holocaust was a hate crime not rooted in religious doctrine. 9/11 was a
hate crime rooted in religious doctrine. The whipping of a grandmother who
was having tea with a man in her home is not considered a hate crime though
it is rooted in religious doctrine.
