I typically feel the same but I would recommend looking at the
benefits and comparing them to other cards. I have a Hilton AMEX for
personal purchases and a Delta Business AMEX for my company. Both
have annual fees, but the rewards more than pay for the fee (if you
use them). I get 5% back on Delta purchases and a number of other
companies (FedEx). The discounts over a year are always far more than
the annual fee. Of course, I may occasionally be paying more for a
Delta flight than an AirTran flight, but I prefer Delta anyway so it's
not a big deal for me.

Another thing to consider is that MC and Visa cards are through
companies who might buy/sell your card account to other banks at any
time. A few times I've gotten a card with great benefits just to have
another company buy my account and cut off the privileges when they
roll it up into one of their own programs. With AMEX, you are always
dealing with AMEX. The card account isn't going to change hands.

It turns into a math problem in the end, but I would run the math out
for a year or two on any card and see if the bennies would pay for the
fee plus some, especially if you plan on using it for "everything".
