Heh, I *think* I see where you're going with this, and the answer is I don't NEED a card at all. In fact, I haven't had one for years, just paid everything with my check card. However, if I am going to be a responsible spender (which I clearly have become over the years), why not make some money while spending it? Seems silly NOT to take advantage of cash-back programs, since I am going to spend the money one way or another.
