oops, all this got lost for some reason:

we just had the pleasure of blowing a wad on that stuff, and we love it.
we bought a linksys ap with 4 port router, 3 linksys pcmcia (laptop)
cards, 1 linksys pci (workstation) card, and 1 d-link pci (workstation)
card

still have 3 computers to go, but we ran outta $$$ ;P

Yes, you need an access point, unless you just wanna connect the
computers (with what they call AdHoc). Modem? Cable, dsl? Should go
right into the access point. As Kevin said, very easy to set up (for
windows 2k/XP at least). Still haven't tried getting my linux stuff on
yet. All of our stuff is linksys 'cept for the one d-link card. As
long as we get 802.11b compatible, I believe we are set, whatever the
brand. What was really fun was when the gf's computer asked 'What
network do you want to join' and listed ours, and one other (we live in
an apt.) - lol. That's when i decided it was a good time to turn 128
encryption on, and limit the ap by mac address....

=D
