See it's not curious.  That's the thing.

I don't need research because I understand the financial reality:

(1.) Doctors, labs, pharma, and hosptials charge for their services

(2.) Those charges typically exceed what an average citizen can pay for.

(3.) Insurance is a business wherein people sell the risk that they'll
have a event that they can't afford.

(4.) Health care costs have risen so high that very little of that
risk is worth purchasing.

(5.) Currently Medicare, for example, doesn't even cover routine
physician visits.

Thus there is no "competing" between government and private industry
and there won't be.  Government uses private industry to administer
Medicare, for example.  Always has.

Without private companies there IS no Medicare.

So the solution is going to involve recreating the rules of the market
and redesigning the roles government and various companies can play.

The greatest impact of ANY change is going to be on doctors.

And, oh boy, I can't WAIT till they start whining.  When they do - and
they will and it'll be VERY loud - I'll be the first to tell you.
