Ah, these are puppies she bred herself? Yeah I'd really have to stay step
carefully. Breeding causally is not for the amateur...purebred dogs in
particular always have genetic/hereditary issues that run in the breed and
should be properly screened for. A good breeder can talk intelligently about
their breeding stock and what good (as well as weak) areas their dogs have and
what screening and prenatal care they do. In my own breed for instance, all
breeding dogs should have their hips xrayed for hip dysplasia, eyes checked for
collie eye and PRA, blood screening done for von Willabrands, etc.

It doesn't necessarily mean you are going to have problems if you don't buy
from a good breeder....but you sure are more likely to....and you also are
encouraging the indiscriminate breeding of dogs that is causing so many dogs
ending up being put to sleep for lack of homes. Not much different than buying
from pet stores that are supplied by puppy mills. It's harsh to say that when
it's family, and I don't know the full situation of course....but sadly, it's
true that too many people breed dogs just to make some extra money, or because
it sounds fun to have a bunch of puppies, etc. without really thinking about
whether it really is the right thing to do when there is such an overpopulation
of dogs in the country already. And the whole "let's make up our own breed"
stuff really bugs me to no end. It's just all smoke and mirrors.

Sigh - okay, stepping off my soapbox now.
