Food stamps and welfare helped keep my sister and I from starving and I only
had to get dinner out of a dumpster from behind a restaurant a couple of
times growing up. County health clinic immunizations kept us from getting
tetanus. A federal training welfare to work program allowed my mother to get
off of welfare and eventually own a house. Subsidized student loans allowed
me to go to college and get a degree that has gotten me into the middle
class and paying taxes back into the system that helped me.
